Ottawa is set to unveil a new national automotive strategy today, scrapping the electric vehicle sales mandate and replacing it with European-style emission standards. The plan also brings back consumer EV rebates and includes a $1.5 billion fund for charging infrastructure. The move comes after Prime Minister Mark Carney paused the mandate during the trade fight with the U.S., with automakers pushing for a full reset. Prime Minister Mark Carney is doubling down on Canada's role as a middle power, telling the World Economic Forum that countries like ours can shape a new global order by working together. He warned that great powers are using economic integration as coercion and said middle nations must build coalitions rooted in human rights and sovereignty. Experts say Canada's soft power, culture, institutions and diversity could help build the trust needed to make that strategy work. A new Angus Reid report says half of Canadians now struggle to find or access family doctor, up sharply from 40% a decade ago. One in eight have been searching for more than a year and have given up entirely. Even with more doctors per capita, demand is outpacing capacity, and Canadians report major hurdles getting tests, specialists, and even emergency care. Seven in 10 say health care in their province has worsened over the past decade. Ontario students are feeling the squeeze as university entry averages keep climbing. Nearly half have admitted students at some schools now carry 95-plus averages. Experts say great inflation and pressure on teachers are driving the trend.
